In the Pueblo Indian tradition and belief, ladders were used to ascend and descend, cross worlds, and access cave dwellings. They also use ladders in spiritual kiva ceremonies held in a large room that is circular and underground. People climb down the ladders into underground chambers and then climb back out to ascend to Earth. This process symbolizes the mythical emergence of ancestors into the world and connects participants to their ancestors. Kiva ladders are usually made of pine poles that have been hand scraped. The rungs of the ladder are notched to fit into the upright poles and rawhide lacing is used to lash each joint together in a cross pattern.

The Kiva ladders have evolved into a signature design element of the Southwest, often used decoratively to display blankets. Similarly, the vibrant bowl showcasing chili peppers pays homage to the Southwest’s rich visual tradition.
